Overview of the Governance of a Network Chapter
Governance has three layers of leadership:
A five-member visionary Board of Trustees A paid or voluntary Executive Director An Operating Council made up of Level Three graduates who are, at least initially, volunteers
The Importance of a Visionary Board
The organizational governance of a Network chapter is based on a model advocated by John Carver, who wrote Boards that Make a Difference and Reinventing Your Board. This model of governance for not-for-profits creates a Board of Trustees that acts as a visionary, policy-setting body rather than a group of people who do the work. This allows the Board to have more time and energy to thoughtfully consider the organization and how to fulfill its mission rather than be caught up in more short-term events and details.
A Network chapter has three kinds of membership.
Supporting Membership is for individuals that support the mission of the Network chapter. Participation in Healing Our Nation programs is not required.
Institutional Membership is for organizations that support the mission of the Network chapter. Participation in Healing Our Nation programs is not required.
Action Membership is for individuals who have completed the Level 3 program: Strategic Planning to Overcome Racism..
The basic difference between the three kinds of membership is that only Action Members may:
Serve in a governance capacity Participate in the election of the local Board of Trustees Become instructors for local and national programs.
