After field-testing HON programs for over fifteen years, in more than twenty-eight cities, with over 60,000 participants, it became obvious that something more than great
programs were needed if we as a nation were to have
a chance of overcoming racism in our children's lifetime.

For one thing, so much program training was still needed. So many program graduates sought support and guidance. So many program facilitators needed time to process their experiences and update their program content and presentation skills.

What became most clear was the great need to create action teams of program participants both locally and nationally. They needed to build on one another's knowledge base of experience in working for change. Time and again, we saw program graduates taking action to overcome racism within an institution, with no system for sharing their experiences with others who might like to take action in a similar institution.

Experience has proven that the real job of education and change begins once the program study is complete.

Throughout the years of field-testing, we interviewed various groups that were using Healing Our Nation programs in a not-for-profit structure. From their feedback and our experience, we have created a national membership organization called Healing Our Nation Network. We also created chapters and bylaws so that groups using HON programs would have a systematic way to support program graduates to work for change.

Network chapters support local and national leadership

Network chapters are designed to support local and national leadership for overcoming institutionalized prejudice by:

  • Supplying more people to do the work
  • Creating greater financial resources necessary for the long-term commitment to, and survival of, this movement
  • Fostering improved emotional and intellectual readiness of our leadership
  • Networking resources, including sharing of experiences of successes and challenging one another across the nation to heal the institutions of our nation.
