Systematic discrimination can instill patterns of self-hate, create feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness, undermining the family, collective action and leadership.
Internalized conditioning instills patterns of self-hate
Hatred for one's body and physical appearance An inability to notice or value one's own unique attributes and abilities, or even to value one's own life.
Creates feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness
Undermines the ability to pursue long-term goals such as education and relationships. Compels escape through unhealthy activities such as the abuse of alcohol, drugs, rampant consumerism, gambling and destructive sexual activity.
Distresses the family
Causes parents of the targeted group to invalidate their children with criticism and faultfinding, thereby potentially destroying their children's confidence and self-esteem. Causes men and women to undervalue one another, to inflict great hurt on each other, to not trust and support each other. This can undermine the foundation of many marriages and relationships.
Undermines collective action and leadership
Causes people to criticize members of their group and have unrealistic expectations. Effects can be especially severe on those who have the courage to step forward and assume leadership responsibilities in their community or organization. Causes members of the targeted group to identify with the interests of the dominant group and sometimes be used as a mouthpiece to support agendas that actually undermine their own interest.
