The Art of Listening is a method to process thoughts and emotions experienced by workshop participants as they share information, gain understanding of each other's struggles, and begin exploring their racial conditioning.

The Art of Listening is a powerful process, yet simple to do.
|
|
|

|
|
It involves one or more people paying close attention to someone who is talking. Participants will usually do this listening process in pairs, though sometimes in groups of threes or fours. In a pair, two people take turns listening attentively to each other for a set period of time, one to five minutes.
|

This time of being listened to offers an opportunity for participants to examine past & current experiences When participants have these opportunities to process what they are thinking and feeling, they participate more fully and appropriately, having refined what they wish to communicate to the larger group by talking in pairs first.

The Art of Listening is structured communication that fosters a greater safety in the workshop
Helps participants overcome fears about talking Provides an opportunity for everyone to be listened to without having to communicate in the larger group Drains off painful emotion that often leads to attacks Fosters better listening skills that many participants use not only in the workshop but continue to use long after the program is completed
